We found another potential house. It is 1.7 miles from my wife's workplace (and 7 miles from mine). So, that's good. I think. How will the CX-5 handle that short of a commute? I know short distance driving like that can be hell on a car. Any tips?
The house is pretty much new and it's only still on the market because the first offer for it fell through.

Honestly I think you will be fine.
If you are really worried about it just make sure to warm the car up a bit during the cold months and use it to go on long trips to get the oil nice and hot. Running errands on the weekend should help too.
If you can, just ride a freaking bike to work or something.

Yeah so it's still something to use for the week end or trips to get groceries and so on... But when you're that close from your work, a bicycle is a great choice to commute.

It shouldn't hurt it... it's a car...

Damn that's a lot of house for not much coin. I miss living not in PA...
Your car will be fine, especially since I'm sure you'll be driving it for errands/trips/etc. Just keep changing the oil every 3-6 months and trans fluid every 15k and it'll be golden.

It would make sense if the 1 mile wasn't on a four lane highway that has monumental traffic. And my wife and I both have to arrive at work looking relatively professional. :/

I'd love to and my wife would too, but the roads to our workplaces are major four lane highways with heavy, heavy traffic. In fact, bicycles aren't allowed on one of them. Not sure about the other.

I dont know your route exactly but try the bicycling layer in Google Maps. One trail looks like it goes under a highway.

Wow, those house prices. You literally cannot even find a studio flat on the outskirts of London for that money.
But you could have this:

"One underground parking space situated in a modern building with porter and lift"

Just a highway? Damn, that sucks... Then yes, car, no choice...

I live about 9 miles from work, I havent had any problems with my TL or my civic before it. By the time I get there everything is up to temp, even in the winter. I take 4 roads, the majority are 40mph speed limits

1.7 miles? Walk. Or bike. It'll be better for your wife and for the car.
Edit: New Idea - drop her off on your way to work. It'll save the CX-5 from the silly short trips and you can still look professional when you arrive at your workplaces.

Get a motorcycle with a sidecar, obviously.

I am about 7 miles from work and I spend many weekends per year biking 15+ miles a day, but I definitely would never bike to work. That 7 miles is all divided highway and if I took a route that followed country roads, it would be closer to 10 miles. I am fine with that distance but those roads are still made for cars. Seeing as it is so cheap to drive that distance, its a no brainer to just not even consider biking. I would much rather bike for fun rather than as a commute!

Interesting idea. My current commute to work is only 6 miles and my car handles it okay. But we could share cars and alternate driving them every other week. Walking or biking is not an option, due to the types of roads we have to travel on.
